Alert: Traditional Education Systems are Becoming Obsolete. Part II.

As I previously said, this is the second part of the post about the big changes that are happening in the education systems around the world.

We shouldn’t be surprised if every day new students at their university lectures know more stuff than their teachers. This can occur particularly in classes related to computer programming, systems engineering or computational science and engineering.

In many cases, the students complement the teacher’s knowledge. This is due to the existence of a huge number of tutorials, manuals and courses available for free on the web, which are very user friendly and that can teach us about a vast variety of topics.

We can find content for anyone and everyone.

Here are a couple examples:

http://www.youtube.com/edu

youtube.com/edu: Hundreds of universities and institutes have a channel on this site. Here, you can access relevant content and share it with others.

http://freesciencelectures.com/

freesciencelectures.com: The name is pretty self-explanatory. On this site you can find science related videos and lectures.

http://ecorner.stanford.edu/ecorner.stanford.edu: For the entrepreneur that lives inside you, Stanford University shares podcasts and videos of entrepreneurial thought leaders and innovators from Silicon Valley.

http://oyc.yale.edu/oyc.yale.edu: Yale University has also available lectures of Philosophy, English, Physics, Economy, Engineering, just to mention a few.

http://www.apple.com/education/mobile-learning/itunes u: You can access this section through the itunes store. It contains more than 100,000 educational files: audio and video.

It seems that we’ll be lacking time because there’s infinte content.

Intelligent Lunchbox

This intelligent lunchbox called Sunch can make your life easier. Specially if at lunch time you generally found yourself without a table to sit down, a dish or a fork to eat. This luchbox includes it all.

The lunchbox converts into a tray with an array of dishes to eat from. When each side of the outer box  is opened, they flatten out to become a table. Ring shaped slots at the bottom of each dish, container and bottle ensure they don’t topple over the table.

Besides, it is microwave and dishwasher safe.

Google + Wolfram Alpha =

puzzleI doubt that Wolfram Alpha could takeover Google’s place as the nº 1 search engine in the world. First of all because the nature of each search engine is completely different from the other, one is completely exclusive while the other is completely inclusive.

Both as everything, have their pros and their cons. I think Wolfram Alpha is still on diapers, but will certainly give us several surprises in the future.

Now, if each of them has something to bring to the table, why not add them on a Firefox extension and use them both at the same time? This is what this add-on proposes and I think it’s a great idea.

Cosmic Calendar

I have already mentioned in previous posts that I am a HUGE Carl Sagan fan, not just because of his expertise in several science areas, but also because he loved to share everything he knew with calendariopeople and he did it in a way that was really easy to understand for everyone.

One of my favorite explanations made by him is the cosmic calendar and it is precisely the topic of this post.

The main purpose of the cosmic calendar is to represent the history of the universe in a calendar year (from January to December) since the Big Bang till today. The object is to represent the most important events in a timeline to have a better perspective and understanding of what happened billions of years ago.

Having this in mind, this is how the cosmic calendar looks like:

JANUARY

  • January 1st: The Big Bang. The universe is formed.

FEBRUARY

MARCH

APRIL

MAY

  • May 1st: Origin of the Milky Way.

JUNE

  • Planetary systems are formed.

JULY

  • Planetary systems are formed.

AUGUST

  • Planetary systems are formed.

SEPTEMBER

  • September 9th: Origin of the Solar System.
  • September 14th: Formation of the Earth.
  • September 25th: Origin of life on Earth.

OCTOBER

  • October 2nd: Formation of the oldest known rocks.
  • October 9th: Oldest fossils.

NOVEMBER

  • November 1st: Sexual differentiation.
  • November 12th: Oldest photosynthetical plants known.
  • November 15th: Eukaryotes appear (first cells with a nucleus).

DECEMBER

  • December 1st: Formation of an atmosphere filled with oxygen on Earth.
  • December 18th: First plancton.
  • December 19th: First fish. Vertebrates appear.
  • December 21st: First insects.
  • December 23rd: Reptiles appear.
  • December 24th: First dinosaurs.
  • December 26th: Mammals appear.
  • December 28th: First flowers. Dinosaurs become extinct.
  • December 29th: First primates.
  • December 31st: First human appears.

Temporary Scale:

Ω A month represents 1.25 billion years.
Ω A day represents 40 million years.
Ω A second represents 500 years.

When I first read this data I found myself in a universal context in which I had never been.

On the next post I’ll give the detail of what happened on December 31st of the cosmic calendar.

If you want further information about the topic you can find it in the famous Carl Sagan’s TV series “Cosmos” or in his book  “The Dragons of Eden.” In youtube you can also find related content.

Flogos

flogosSomehow similar to what Curb does, of whom I speak in this post, Flogos is a company dedicated to break the boundaries in advertising matters. In FLOGOS they create LOGOS that fly.

FLYING + LOGO = FLOGOS.

Based on a patented technology, FLOGOS are basically made up of soap and several gases including helium. They last around 30 to 40 minutes, they can travel up to 50 kilometers (30 miles) and reach an altitude around 5,000 feet.

Besides, these flying logos are 100% environment friendly.

Good idea.
